On a hill far away

Tales of abuse and torture plague the news headlines on a daily basis. It is hard to picture or even believe some of the horrific tales that are told and not told through the media. I believe that God is going to use the media for His purposes during these final days that we live in. Amazed by the beauty of the range at Mount Carmel, our tears flowed as we heard and saw the tale of some of the women and children who find refuge in this hidden treasure. God’s heart was being transplanted to ours, after the DVD’s were finished, we closed with a time of prayer and again the presence of Almighty God was overwhelming. A connection made, unity of heart towards those who are strangers in this land, widows and orphans – a reflection of the Jews in days gone by.

What a privilege it was to serve in the land in such a practical way. Seeing the hopelessness of the people there broke my heart. Yet I was inspired by how the simple things we did, at a widow’s home I dusted, tided, cleaned windows, organised and blessed; at a holocaust survivor’s home I cleaned windows and shutter until like new; in various places, I cleaned windows and scrubbed toilets, caused so much joy for others.

No more room at the Inn

Children laughing, mothers busying around, as we loved on the people. There was joy in one house at least, for those precious days we spent painting, playing and simply being around the people in the camp. What a life-changing time in an area so unsafe to us, yet safe to those who live there. I learned this fast as our team passed a man carrying a 2 inch think bundle of US hundred dollar bills. Our guide told me, ‘This is the safest place on earth.’ I was shocked and surprised at his words, I smiled on the outside while on the inside I was unconvinced. It was a 5 minute walk from our hotel through the concrete to get to the house where we served. With murals of Hussain on the walls just outside, we knew where we were not. I spend the days sanding walls and playing with the children. Plenty of sweet tea with sage was consumed during those hours. Head dresses, unveiled beauties we saw as my heart began to melt for the unchosen brother. God revealed to me His love for this side of the family – His passion to see their hearts softened and how He longs to have them redeemed to be part of the family again. There was no room at the Inn when Joseph came to town, unwanted and dejected only the cave for the sheep remained for them to shelter. Our team was received with open arms and joy. Tears shed on both sides, the bonds of love surpassing language, nationality and religion. We left with many memories for all.

Gripped by compassion

We moved from downtown haifa to a community of believers, Or Ha Carmel situated within the Mount Carmel region in a Druze Village. Our purpose was to bless and serve the community in true GTS fashion. We arrived and were given a short tour by Amy, a long standing friend of the Rudolph family. We saw the shelter for the Sudanese and Eritrean women and children. The ministry centre and the congregation building with prayer cave.
Amazed by the beauty of the place, we started work playing with the children. I headed up most of the games from duck duck goose to capture the flag. It was such a special time for all, running in and out of the trees, chatting to the parents sitting on the rocks and watching the children laughing and playing free.
Preperations began for our shabbat meal as the games drew to a close. The peace of God rested on each one as we breathed deep!
After the meal, Rita the founder and director of the ministry centre came and showed us two DVD shorts that had been made in 2007 of the children and the women from the shelter. Tears flowed as we heard tales of abuse and torture. God’s heart being transplanted to ours as we continued to watch. We closed with a time of prayer and again the presence of Almighty God was overwhelming. Rita was struck hard by the compassion she saw in each of us, in her words, ‘I don’t know if it is just the relationship that I have with the Rudolph family, but I am truly overwhelmed by your even wanting to see this movie and to pray for a deeper revelation of God’s heart. It is not like others who volunteer here- it is a unity of heart towards those here who are strangers, widows and orphans, just as we Jews have been for many years.’

sunglasses and raincoats

Love with total obedience, stepping out relying on Him, yield and see the atmosphere changed. You see, talking about love is easy, how do you define it? How do you practice it? Our day began with our eyes drawn to the bigger picture gaining God’s heart for His people in the land.
Dancing, singing, smiles all round as we lifted our praises to God during the service at Or HaCarmel. The worship was enthralling and the message clear – God has come to comfort those who mourn and are grieved by the world. We packed and headed down the moutain for some ice cream coffee and sun! Sunglasses and raincoats, hacky sack and volleyball accompanied our fellowship with the whole GTS team and some of the Tents of Mercy youth as we chatted and shared lunch at the beach in Haifa. Another day of service in the land.

Outreach

Dreams unfolded:

Our outreach trip is sooner than I realise and this year, our class has the privilege to go to Ethiopia. Ethiopia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethiopia)
is the oldest independent country in Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa)
, with one of the longest recorded histories in the world. Ethiopia is also the second oldest Christian nation having maintained its Christian character since the 4th century AD. The Bible isn’t silent in regards to Ethiopia and in fact, in a number of places links Ethiopia directly with God’s plan for Israel. Also, God has given a forerunning anointing that was imparted to Ethiopia through Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian official (Acts 8:30). I desire to help fan into flame that anointing that will carry the Gospel throughout East Africa and the Middle East.

Growing up, I remember praying for the work that a missionary friend Maureen Dolan was involved with in Addis Ababa (the capital city). Stories of people, children and families living with nothing, using any scrap to build shelters to live in, remain in my memory from childhood. In September 1968, my uncle Ian went to Ethiopia on an SAS exhibition to map out a section of the Nile River that had not been successfully mapped out yet. An adventure, packed with excitement. During the expedition, my uncle’s life was taken and his body was never recovered. Today, a memorial stands near the place where he drowned. Although this is not the reason for my trip to Ethiopia, it has been a life-long desire to be in this nation and I count it such a privilege to have such an opportunity to serve in this nation.

Gateways Beyond (www.gatewaysbeyond.org) has a long history of travelling to Ethiopia and has led teams there since 1991. Through their many relationships, our team will have the opportunity to serve the poorest of the poor in feeding centers for the homeless, orphanages, and prisons. We will also be breaking into smaller teams to share the gospel to the unreached. Another exciting opportunity we will have is to minister to the Jewish people who are still waiting to make Aliyah to Israel and who live in dire circumstances as they wait. The Bible is so clear about God’s heart for the poor and I am humbled that I am able to go minister to the Ethiopian people. I want to be the arms of God stretched out to these precious people and I want to show them Jesus through my love for them.

To be able to go on this outreach trip, I need to raise €1500 Euros by 30th April. Would you also please pray about taking part in sending me to Ethiopia? Any financial donation would be a huge blessing to me. You can securely donate on-line at http://www.gatewaysbeyond.org/donate.php . Just be sure to designate the donation is to go towards Gwen Paget’s Ethiopia outreach trip. Or you can send a cheque.

On Sunday our class flies to Israel for 4 weeks of serving in the Land. This is exciting time for all of us as we will spend time ministering in the land where Jesus walked. Please remember us in your prayers as we seek to bless this nation that God holds so dear to His heart.

With love,

Gwen

PS Going to Ethiopia is one of my greatest joys and an answer to all the prayers of my childhood. Take time to remember some of the prayers from your younger years (perhaps spiritual) God is faithful to complete the work that He has started in you if you do not give up.

In Honour of Mr Rudolph, the GTS 2 girls wrote and performed this song at the first Gigue 2009. It is to the Aladin theme song A Whole New World…

GTS is our world
Here on this magic carpet
Pressing into the Father’s heart,
in worship every day!

Can you open your eyes?
It’s 6 o’clock in the morning
Up and down the eternal stairs,
it’s running twice a week!

A whole new world
A set of rules, a new curfew
RA’s to tell us what is right or
not GTS appropriate

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when we’re way up here, it crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole new world with you

Now I’m in a whole new world with you
Unbelievable chores, indescribably schedules
Blessed are the flexible,
they shall bend and shall not break!

A whole new world, come beloved, press in!
Scripture memorising too, it’s OK you’ll get better!
Dancing and singing loud and shouting out
FATHER! Praying in our heavenly language

A whole new world, lift your heads O ye gates
Jewish roots we will pursue, getting new revelation
I’ll chase Him everywhere, He’s always there
So let us share this whole new world with you

A whole new world, a whole new world
That’s where we’ll be, that’s where we’ll be
A thrilling chase, a wonderous place
for you and me

A Week of Life!

In life, one has many experiences that both shape and challenge natural self. No year is different to the next from this point of view. I find that for my life, I am facing head on many aspects that are not pleasing to God, others or even to myself. Pride is an issue that we all face and it is my mission to root this out from my life. I realise that when you ask God to grow to new levels in life, one can see clearer the things that displease God. I saw a picture during worship of my heart surrounded by walls. I knew that these walls were rooted in pride – mistrust comes from being too proud to admit or show that you are not coping with life. I believe that we are called to live lives that are accountable to the people that we choose to walk along side and that is why it is so important to use wisdom in choosing a band of brothers. At GTS (Gateways Training School), we choose to walk along side a band of people who are all seeking after the same thing – to hasten his soon return. A community of people living in a place where first things truly come first – to love the Lord with all of my heart, soul and strength. Only from this place, from a place where we allow God to first move in our lives rooting out the impurities that we can minister to others.

Some people out there, I’m sure are wondering what it is that I am actually doing during these 5 months of my life. I wanted to answer some of those questions here in this blog entry. Our moto is Blessed are the flexible, for the shall bend and shall not break! With this in mind we have a schedule, however if God breaks in and decides to mess our plans a little, or a lot, then we don’t mind!

Monday-Friday we begin each day with 30mins of reading our Bibles then we pray in the spirit for 15 mins or so to stir our spirit for worship. After this all the staff and community join us and we worship with songs and exortations and prayer for a couple of hours. Usually after this there is a break. After this, the second year students (which is what I am), have classes with various teachers until lunch. Wk 1 Matthew Rudolph, wk 2 Asher Intrader, wk 3 Norm Fredrick, wk 4 Michael and Aimee Hennen, wk 5 Jeff Collins. After lunch the session are different every day.

Monday we do a research for the Ringing the Med project. The project we are working on is compiling information, for prayer, on all the countries that touch the Mediterranean Sea. The country that I am currently working on is Gibraltar. After the session, we all take a turn at cleaning and clearing all the areas that we use – there are no paid cleaners so this is a practical way of keeping all our areas clean and tidy! I clean the office on a Monday.

Tuesday we have either equipping classes or living room sessions. The equipping sessions are different every week talking about dreams, prophecy. Living room sessions are where we are invited in the homes of the senior leadership couples and talk on a pre-established topic. After this, I clean my bedroom and bathroom.

Wednesday we have small group. My small group leader is Rachel Potter with Chelsea, Sietske and I. After this, I watch Coby (although this has not happened yet!)

Thursday we have a bible study session and we are working our way through the book of Romans. Very good stuff! Each week we memorise a verse for a chapter, do an outline and answer questions. Before the end of the school, our whole class needs to memorise chapter 11 and 12. After class I clean the worship room!

Friday is different from every other day. After worship, we have a student led service 2/3 of the students bring a word. This is an awesome time where God truly comes and works through each student regardless of ability. After this the second years have life skills sessions about finances, blogging, newsletter writing. I slice the meat and cheese for the weekend for my service time!

Friday is finished with a Shabbat meal – Freshly baked Challah – a sweet bread which is amazing. We spend time reflecting on the goodness of God and speak blessings over our family. Sometimes it is held at a local resturant, other times in our dining room and other times we split up and spend time in a family home. Every week is special and every week is different.

Up and coming events:
Sunday 1st March 2009 we are having a worship gathering in Limassol – we are praying for revival to fall in the hall and move all over the Island!
Sunday 8th March 2009 we are flying to Israel for 4 weeks – we will be serving in communities that desperately need help. Our purpose is to serve and bless the body of believers in Israel and reach out to the many who need to hear the Good News of Jesus. As a class we are expectant of miracles and lives to be radically transformed as we pour out all that we have received. Please pray for our health and for a deeper revelation of the fathers heart for Israel both for me and all of my class mates: Chelsea, Marie, Tabitha, Sietske and Tony.

Testimony: Since coming to the Cyprus Jan 2008, I have urged all of my prayer supporters to pray for rain. As Cyprus is a very dry land and constantly need a huge supply of water. Please continue to pray as there is lots of rain still needed, however I am so excited because for the month of February, it has rained almost every day! What a blessing on the land. My hearts cry is that God would also rain his spiritual rain down on the Island in greater quantities.
